The Timucuan Indians, attracted to the mouth of Turkey Creek at the Indian River by fresh water springs and plentiful fish, oysters, and wildlife, are thought to have been the first civilization in the Palm Bay area. Palm Bay's recent history began in the 1850's when the first white settlers, also drawn by the bounty and beauty of the area, built homes along Turkey Creek. Originally referred to as Tillman, the settlement was described as a "small strip of hammock...on each side of Turkey Creek...mostly pine and palmetto, miserable sandy barren oak scrub, some ponds and interspersed with sawgrass and gallberry." By the mid-nineteenth century, there was a lumbering operation, packing house, and orange groves, but growth was slow until the arrival of the railroad in 1894. Now goods could be brought in and produce could be shipped to market faster, encouraging more families to immigrate to the area. -- Source: Wikipedia.com

01/19/2012

A 45-year-old pizza delivery woman was robbed at gunpoint Tuesday shortly after delivering a pie to a customer at a Jacksonville apartment complex.

The woman, who was a Pizza Hut delivery driver,  had dropped off a pizza about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday at eh Island Pint Apartments in the 1000 block of Broward Road.  As she left an apartment building and headed to her car in a parking lot, a man who was wearing a ski mask approached her from behind.

Your Evening Sift
01/17/2012

Back to work Tuesday tomorrow. Ugh. Enjoy your evening Sift.

A- Random Pixels remembers the upcoming anniversary of the big Miami snow of 1977.

At the Associated Press bureau on Biscayne Boulevard, 29 year-old staffer Marty Merzer was working the overnight shift and it was his task to break the bone-chilling news to the world.

A few days ago, Merzer shared with me what he remembered of that night.
B- Speaking of cold weather, Go Hydrology! posts some images of ice in the swamp that were taken a few nights back.

C- The Cuban Triangle is following the case against American Alan Gross in Cuba and has some links and commentary.
It’s an 18-page document that begins with his business address in Maryland and ends with a list of every single item that was in his possession, right down to his Scotiabank credit card. In between it describes his activities, and it makes reference to several volumes containing hundreds of numbered pages of evidence gathered against him, much of it obtained from the computer, I-pad, and flash drives that Gross carried.
D- South Florida Theatre Scene discusses the controversy associated with the annual Carbonell Awards nominations.
There have been complaints over the years that the process is flawed, and polical; that some are nominated for political reasons instead of on merit: and those complaints are not without some merit.
E- Belle Isle Blog stumbles upon a treasure trove of old photographs that capture Belle Isle and the other islands along the Venetian Causeway.
The archive includes beautiful old color postcards, like the one above, which we had not seen before, as well as photos that provide an even closer look at early Belle Isle (pre-condo) and the construction and development of the Venetian Islands and Miami Beach.
